ROAD RAGE: AN OUT OF CONTROL PROBLEM
In mid-February, a Plymouth driver was arrested for striking another motorist’s vehicle several times with a baseball bat. The reason? According to reports, an altercation between the two men turned into a violent road rage incident. Although driving can certainly be stressful, overly aggressive driving can quickly turn deadly.
AAA describes road rage behavior as:
- Forcing another motorist off the road
- Making obscene gestures
- Sideswiping
- Chasing another vehicle
- Swearing
- Ramming
- Throwing objects at other vehicles or their drivers
- Displaying or brandishing a weapon
Unfortunately, these types of behaviors have become increasingly common. According to a peer-reviewed study published in the medical journal Psychiatry, one-third of drivers surveyed admitted to engaging in road rage, with the majority of respondents identifying as male. The Department of Transportation released statistics showing that more than 1,300 deaths between 2008 and 2012 were caused by aggressive driving.
Protect Yourself from Aggressive Drivers
When tempers flare behind the wheel, people can get seriously hurt. An angry driver can come upon you fast. Here are some tips for staying safe around aggressive motorists.
- If possible, ignore the other driver
- Change lanes or allow the other driver to pass you
- Avoid making eye contact
- Stay calm
- Don’t respond to or challenge the other driver
Most importantly, always report aggressive driving that puts you or other motorists in danger. Contact the police right away if you feel threatened or unsafe.
